About Dean of SGIDT

Brief Introduction

Dr. B. S. Beniwal was born in village Salemgarh of Hisar Dist., Haryana (then Punjab), in a family of peasants and army men. He is an alumnus of Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar and joined the same as Assistant Professor / MDO- Cum- Dairy Manager in the year 1989. He was instrumental in conceiving, designing, establishing, commissioning and successfully running of an Experimental Dairy Plant in the Dept. of APT (now LPT) for teaching, research and extension activities. Because of such facilities, various Veterinary universities adopted the LPT Dept. of HAU as a model Dept. to set up in their university. Dr. Beniwal rose to the rank of Professor (Dairy Tech.) in January, 2009. He had been teaching courses in Dairy/ Food Technology to the UG, PG and Doctoral students of various disciplines like Veterinary, Animal Sciences, Home Sciences, Agril. Engg. Agriculture, Food Science & Technology, APT, LPT etc. In total he has taught 23 Courses to 152 batches. Dr. Beniwal earned the prestigious FAO fellowship and visited Cornell University USA. Other countries that he has visited in academic pursuits include Pakistan, Turkey, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and UK. Dr Beniwal has attended 20 advanced on the job trainings in various spheres, which include Quality Control, Dairy Processing, Education Technology, Computer Applications, Analytical Techniques, Certification Systems, Food Safety, Membrane Technology, Export Management, Financial Management etc. He has attended 24 National and International conferences/ workshops etc. in various capacities. During service he earned an MBA degree also.

He has two dozen of research papers, one edited book, four manuals and two patents (published) to his credit. He headed Delhi Milk Scheme (which was twice headed by Dr Verghese Kurien also), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Govt. of India as General Manager for six years, handling an annual budget of INR 4000 – 5000 Million and about 1.5 thousand employees which included civil servants also. He made headlines when he turned this perpetually loss making organisation into a profit earning unit. During this period Dr. Beniwal was appointed as Technical Advisor to the Hon’ble Minister of State (Agri.) Govt. of India. He is a Life Member of Association of Food Scientists and Technologists, Indian Dairy Association, Indian Science Congress Association and Dairy Technology Society of India. He has been a Member of Board of Studies of Food Science Faculty of TANUVAS from 2010 to 2015. He is Member of the Executive Committee of North Zone, Indian Dairy Association since 2010 and Vice Chairman, Haryana Chapter of IDA since 2018. Dr Beniwal has been external examiner of many universities. He has been participating in the activities of UGC as a member of evaluation teams for granting of autonomous status to various academic organisations and also as expert in selection team for international fellowships. He is a nominee of the UGC, India in the Governing Council of three academic institutes.  Dr Beniwal has been reasonably responsive with respect to the activities of the Dairy Sector. He has time and again given inputs at various levels in Govt of India for the welfare of milk producers, milk pricing policy, working of Dairy cooperatives, Exim policy etc He has worked closely with Ministers and Secretary level officers of Govt of India. After his superannuation (October, 2018) from Hisar University, on attaining the age of sixty he was selected and joined as Professor of Food Engg. at NIFTEM, a deemed university under the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Govt. of India. However, he preferred to relocate and joined BASU as Dean, SGIDT on 4th of February, 2019 upon his selection.
